Stan was a member of the RAF's 'Y' service during WWII, based in North Africa. The Y service intercepted encoded Axis radio messages and forwarded them to Bletchley Park (home of the Enigma codebreaking) for decoding. Stan helped form a sailplane club based at Podington during the 1960's.
